Ira Block : Making Great Pictures

Discover what making great pictures is all about from American photojournalist Ira Block who worked on many global assignments for National Geographic Magazine

Ira Block first shot for National Geographic Magazine in 1978 and he has also worked assignments for its affiliates – National Geographic Traveler and National Geographic Adventure. His archaeological photography includes colonial excavations in Jamestown, Virginia, his pictures of which illustrate the 2007 book 1607: A New Look at Jamestown, a National Geographic publication. An earlier book, Saving America’s Treasures (2000), contains his photographs of some of the country’s priceless historical artefacts, documents, and sites that were in danger of disappearing. It was published by the National Geographic Society in conjunction with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the White House Millennium Council. His other book credits include Back Roads America and Preserving America’s Past.

One of the things about shooting pictures … and shooting really good pictures, is you have to learn the difference between what your mind and your eyes see and how the camera sees a picture

Ira Block’s skills in photographic lighting are such that he is highly sought after for demanding assignments. As well as his editorial work, he is also involved with other aspects of photography including commercial and portrait work, as well as running a successful stock photography business, teaching photography, making videos (as with the video above as a Sony Artisan of Imagery), and blogging. He is a member of The Photo Society, a group of contributing photographers for National Geographic Magazine.
