The new Panasonic G85 / G80 weather-sealed DSLR-styled mirrorless camera with the same sensor as the G7 but with no AA filter

Panasonic announced the new G85 / G80 camera on Sep 19, 2016. Here are the highlight specifications to what is effectively the G7’s successor (although Panasonic have not explicitly stated this):

  • 16 megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor (like the GX85)
  • New 2.36M dot OLED electronic viewfinder
  • New in-camera focus-stacking mode
  • Depth from Defocus AF
  • New electromagnetic shutter to combat shutter shock
  • Electronic first-curtain shutter (EFCS) for decreased shutter vibration
  • Up to 9fps continuous shooting (up to 80 JPEG / 30 raw)
  • 4K photo
  • 4K video recording (UHD: 3840×2160) at 30 / 25/ 24 fps with stereo sound
  • In-body 5-axis image stabilization and Dual I.S. 2 plus lens-based optical image stabilisation
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with QR-Code for quick connection to smartphone or tablet
  • Weather and dust-sealing
  • SD card slot is now on the grip
  • Optional DMW-BGG1 vertical battery grip


The camera ships in October 2016 as a $900 body only or as a $1,000 kit with Panasonic’s 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 lens. The camera is called the Panasonic Lumix G85 in the USA and the G80 in the UK. In the US market it is possible to shoot a single 4K video clip for up to 45 minutes but those in the European market are limited to the usual 29:59.
