Photographer Mark Steinmetz talks about his beginnings, influences and methods.
One of the photographer’s early influences was Garry Winogrand, about whom he has written reminiscently. Footage of Winogrand working is also featured in the video. Among Steinmetz’s past interviews is an interesting conversation with Blake Andrews in 2012. On the question (amongst numerous others) of what he looks for when out with a camera, he prefers to “collaborate with chance events” rather than creating something more controlled, with the resulting images ultimately fulfilling the role of viewing experiences for other people. Steinmetz has numerous book publications to his name, including Paris In My Time from 2013 (below). You can discover his other works, as well as several articles, essays and interviews, at his independent website.
